Shri Aillak Pannalal Digamber Jain Pathashala, Solapur has been working in the interest of the society since its establishment in the year 1885.  It is one of the rare institutions with a glorious history of one hundred and twenty-two years.  The Pathashala witnessed its growth and development under the all-round supervision of the pioneer of the Indian industries and the epitome of Services to society, Shriman Sheth Walchand and Sheth Lalchand.  Ours has been an institution with the Panchasutri of Knowledge, Character, Love, Service and Management for strengthening liberty, equality and brotherhood in the society.

Walchand College of Arts and Science was established as Solapur College on 8th July, 1962. It was inaugurated at the hands of Shri. Yashwantrao Chavan. It was renamed on 9th February, 1980 in the presence of Shri. Atalbihari Vajpayee.

Our students every year carve a niche for themselves by securing ranks in the Board and University Examinations. Our students have been reaching new summits of academic excellence in all the examinations.  Shri Harishkumar Kale,a student of 12th Science secured 12th position in the merit list of the Pune Board and 2nd position in the Reserved Category.  Miss Sujata Mahadev Patil, a student of B.Sc. Part III stood 1st in Mathematics in Shivaji University , Kolhapur .  She was awarded the Late Waman Vasudev Kulkarni Award for this extraordinary performance.

Shri Suresh Dahigire and Shri Bansode of the Marathi Department passed the National Eligibility Test for lectureship.  Miss Aryani Gangadhara cleared GATE in Mathematics.  Two students from the Master of Social Work Department, Shri Shabbir Ahamad and Miss Kalavati Kamble passed National Eligibility Test for lectureship. 

The Master of Social Work Department has been implementing the Corridor Projecrts of Mirinda and Bill Gates Foundations, the Child Line Project of the Social Justice Ministry, “ Towards Equality and Working with men” in collaboration with Tathapi, Pune and Jal Swarajya and Nirmal Gram Projects.  Shri Vilas Bet, Head of the Social Work Department and faculty, Dr. R.M.Channaveer have successfully carried out a study report sponsored by the U.G.C. on the sensitive issue of communal riots.  The Department has actualized Sure Start, a project in the interest of the health of women and children of the slums, in collaboration with Hello Medical Foundation of Anadur.  The Department runs Placement Cell that enables the candidates to seek employments.  This year a record forty-one candidates availed themselves of the Cell and sought jobs in various organizations through campus interviews.

The Cultural Department of the college added another splendid chapter of success by clenching several prizes and trophies this year.  The college had a wonderful track record during its affiliation to Shhivaji University , Kolhapur .  And it is a matter of great rejoice to announce that the college has been able to both maintain and better its reputation in the extra-curricular field under Solpapur University , Solapur.  This year we secured the runner-up championship in the Youth Festival by winning 13 prizes in different disciplines.  “Rang Jindagike”, “Mansa Mansa Jaagaa Ho” and Shraddha kee Andhshraddha ?”, a one-act play Shri Hanumant Mate happened to the highlights of this marvelous performance.  The Departments of Marathi, Hindi, History, English, Ardhamagadhi and Chemistry organized various programmes in the interests of the students. 

The National Service Scheme Unit of the college organized several programmes this year.  The annual special camp i.e. Vishesh Shram Sanskar Shibir was carried out at Mouje Hagloor of North Solapur Taluqua in which the students did socially useful works and different guests gave vital guidance to both the villagers and the volunteers.  The Unit founded the Red Ribbon Club.  In collaboration with the Vidnyan Bharati, the Red Ribbon Club undertook various activities like Blood donation camp, Rajarshi Shahu Jayanti, Shahid Bhagatsingh Janaynti, Aids Awareness Rally, Patriotic song-singing competitions on the occasions of the Independence Day and the Republic Day.  The volunteers of the Unit, Shri Malage and Shri Gire participated in the State-level N.S.S camp and Shri Kamale and Shri Ghodke participated in the National-lavel N.S.S. camp.  Sixty-three students donated blood on the occasion of the Death Anniversary of Late Bhausaheb Gandhi.  Solapur University , Solapur honored Miss Sarika Tamshetti with its First Best Volunteer award.  Shri Chandrakant Chavan and Dr. S.P.Gaikwad and others took out-of –the-way efforts for the N.S.S. activities.

The Sports Department has once again come off with flying colours.  Miss Shital Kharatmal won the Gold medal in Judo at both city and zonal levels.  Miss Lata Ekkaldevi got the Gold medal in Karate at district level.  She represented the state in the national competitions held in Mumbai.  Shri Allauddin Iqubal Sayyad won the Gold medal in Judo at the zonal competitions held in Pune by representing Solapur.  Shri Shreyas Pandhare achieved the Gold medal in Chess at district level.  Shri Akshay Degaonkar won the the Gold medal in swimming at both district and divisional levels.  Shri Ganesh Bhange secured the Silver medal in 800 meters swimming by representing the Pune division.  The students from the senior wing of the college also fared fantastically in different events.  Shri Naseer Sayyad, Shri Abhijit Moholkar and Shri Vishal Bailbhandare put in bright performance in Basket Ball.  Shri Ganesh Maskale in Chess, Shri Vishal Randive in Soft Ball and Miss Shital Gadhev in athletics did the college proud of them.  Shri Rajesh Bandpatte in cricket and Shri Sunny Rathod in long and triple jumps secured the Silver medals. 

The faculty of our college are totally devoted to the social responsibilities as they are to the academic transactions.  Our faculty Dr. Bhimashankar Birajdar and Shri Hanumant Mate have been awarded the Aadarsh Shikshak Purskaar sponsored by Mahatma Fule Samata Parishad.  Dr.Birajdar has been appointed as a member of the Board of Studies of Karnataka Rajya Mahila Vishwavidyalaya.  He and Shri Rajesh Mali have been honored with the status of Resource Persons for the Nirmal Gram Yojana by the State Government of Maharashtra. Principal Dr.Ajit Manikshete, Dr.Ninad Shaha and Dr. K.R.Rao have been recognized by Solapur University as guides for M.Phil. and Ph.D. research. Dr.Sangram Chavan, Dr.Bhimashankar Birajdar, and Dr.M.D.Shinde have been recognized by Solapur University as guides for M.Phil. research.  The faculty of the college pay attention to the research activities in keeping with the changing scenario.  Different Departments of the college organize projects and seminars to boost the spirit of academic interaction.  Principal Dr. A.H.Manikshete has been guiding four research scholars for M.Phil. and two scholars for Ph.D. degrees.  The Head of the Zoology Department Dr.Ninad Shah has three research scholars for guidance for Ph.D. degree and faculty, Dr.K.R.Rao has two research scholars for the Ph.D. degree guidance.  There are three research scholars for Ph.D. degree and one research scholar for M.Phil. degree reseach under the guidance of Dr.T.D.Thorat, Head, Geology Department and Dr.P.T.Sawant.

The proposal for a seminar sent by Dr.P.T.Sawant and Dr.R.M.Channaveer has been granted by the U.G.C.  The Department of History organized a one-day Seminar on the “Jain and Boudha Religious Philosophies”.  The post-graduate Department conducted a seminar for the students in which the research essays were interactively presented. 

The textbooks for 11th and 12th standards written by Principal Dr.A.H.Manikshete and Dr.S.G.Holikatti on Chemistry and Physics respectively have been recognized by the H.S.C.Board.  The research essays presented by Dr.A.H.Manikshete and Dr.S.G.Holikatti at the Smart Seven workshop in Shri Venkateshwara University , Tirupathi have been recognized.  Shri M.P.Joshi’s anthology in Marathi, “Prabandh”, Shri Arjun Vhatkar’s collection of stories, “Tumban”,Shri Anup Mhetre’s “English Guide”, Dr.A.B.Gaikwad’s “OBC-Rakhiv Jaagaanchaa Itihaas”, Shri M.M.Mane’s “Spardha Parikshaa Maargadarshikaa” and Dr.B.S.Birajdar’s”Sant Tukaram Wa Mahatma Basaweshwara” have been published in different programmes on different occasions.  Shri Arjun Vhatkar has been awarded Aagaashe Purskar for his “Tumban”.  Dr.A.B.Gaikwad has been honored with the Bahujan Sahitya Sangh’s literary award.  Shri M.P.Joshi’s “Prabandh” has been recognized by the Sangamner’s Itihaas Sanshodhan Mandal.  Shri Prashant Mehta’s book in History is going to be published by the Vishal Publications,Mumbai.

In order to bring the students abreast of the latest developments in the academic field the faculty of the college participate and present research papers in various seminars, workshops and symposia conducted at different levels.  Dr A.B.Gaikwad, Shri P.G.Shivkar, Dr M.D.Shinde, Shri V.S.Shirshyad, Shri S.N.Battin, Dr S.P.Gaikwad, Shri S.J.Alandkar and Shri D.M.Zombade participated in various seminars, workshops and symposia.

A Yoga Camp was organized for the development of the personality of the students by the Alumni Association of the college.

This is how the college has fared in different spheres.  The role played by the students, teachers and the non-teaching staff in this splendid performance of the college is invaluable.
